IUHS students score above national average on SAT, ACT

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Students enrolled in the Indiana University High School diploma program score above the national average on the two main college admission tests, the Scholastic Aptitude Test and the ACT.

The 21 IUHS students who reported taking the SAT in 2004 scored an average of 604 on the verbal section of the test and 553 on the mathematics section. National averages in 2004 were 508 on the verbal section and 518 on the mathematics section. One IUHS student scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT (800 verbal and 800 math) in 2004. The 90 IUHS students who have reported taking the SAT since 2000 scored an average of 583 on the verbal section of the test and 544 on the mathematics section.

Eight IUHS students reported ACT scores in 2004. The average composite score of these students was 23.8, compared to the 2004 national average composite score of 20.9. The 23 IUHS students who have reported taking the ACT since 2000 received an average composite score of 23.3.

"The 141 students who have graduated from the IUHS program since its inception in 1999 have been accepted at more than 100 different colleges and universities in the United States and abroad, attesting to the esteem with which these institutions regard the IUHS diploma," said Mike Walsh, director of the diploma program. "Students' scores on the SAT and ACT provide further evidence of the diploma program's ability to make students competitive with their peers and to prepare them for the very best colleges and universities."
