Norton is expected to discuss why Hoosiers export more to Canada than they do to their next seven largest export markets combined. He also will detail vital issues such as North American and world security, that Canada is the largest supplier of energy to the United States, and shared management of the environment, particularly the Great Lakes.

He will speak from 10 to 11:15 a.m. in Room 120 of Woodburn Hall, 1100 E. Seventh St. His visit is sponsored by the Institute for International Business at IU's Kelley School of Business, the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce and the IU Department of Political Science.

The event is free and open to the public. Special parking arrangements have been made for Bloomington Chamber members, who should call 812-336-6381 to register.

Norton represents Canada in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. The Canadian Consulate General, which he heads, promotes Canadian interests -- trade, investment, the environment, culture and academic relations being among the principal ones. The office also provides consular, passport, visa and immigration services.

Until August 2010, Norton served as minister for congressional, public and intergovernmental relations at the Canadian embassy in Washington, D.C. He also has held posts within the national and Ontario provincial governments. He worked in the Canadian parliament and was president and CEO of Ontario Exports Inc.

He has master's degrees from Carleton University and Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and master's and doctorate degrees from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies.
