IU's J. Terry Clapacs to serve as governor's adviser

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A top Indiana University official will play a key role in helping the state of Indiana construct a new stadium for the Indianapolis Colts and expand the adjacent convention center.
J. Terry Clapacs, IU vice president and chief administrative officer, will serve as Gov. Mitch Daniels' adviser to the Indiana Stadium and Convention Building Authority. The appointment was announced by the governor's office on Tuesday (May 17).
"This is an opportunity for IU to contribute to one of the state's most important economic development projects," Clapacs said. "I am honored to be called upon to serve the state in this endeavor."
Clapacs will attend authority meetings and provide members with independent advice and analysis of architectural and construction matters. Clapacs was chosen for the role because of his 35 years of experience in overseeing all major building projects on IU's seven campuses, including the infrastructure that has supported the development of IUPUI into a major urban research university.
Clapacs has worked with several of the world's most prestigious architectural firms in designing IU facilities, and he has overseen construction of numerous large building projects, including some that have won major awards. The IUPUI Natatorium, constructed in 1982, was designated as National New University Building of the Year by American School and University Magazine.
In 1991, IU's Bloomington campus was designated one of America's five most beautiful college campuses by landscape artist Thomas Gaines in his book The Campus as a Work of Art.
Clapacs said that IU has developed very high standards for project design and construction that enable the university to bring projects in on time, within cost and at a high level of quality. These processes and standards should also be helpful to the stadium and convention authority, he said.
Clapacs will serve as an unpaid volunteer and will remain in his current position as an IU vice president.
