Thinking about summer school? Don't forget IU's summer tuition discount

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- As college students make decisions about whether to enroll in summer school, Indiana University officials are issuing a reminder that IU students can save money and accelerate their progress toward earning a degree by taking advantage of a summer 2012 tuition discount.
The IU Board of Trustees approved the tuition discount program in October 2011 in an effort to provide financial relief for students, promote year-round college attendance, shorten the time it takes for students to graduate and make more effective use of university facilities.

Starting this year, Indiana resident undergraduates enrolled at IU campuses statewide will receive a 25 percent discount in tuition for courses taken in the summer. Nonresident undergraduate students will receive an equivalent dollar reduction in their tuition.
The tuition discount offers several ways for students to save money and earn extra credits toward graduation in summer school:
- Indiana University students who live or spend the summer near the campus they attend can enroll in summer classes.
- IU Bloomington students who go home for the summer can enroll in classes at nearby IU regional campuses, or at IUPUI if they live in or near Indianapolis.
- Students who attend a college or university other than IU and who live near an IU campus may choose to enroll in IU summer classes, assuming they ensure the credits will transfer to their home institution.
A special website, summer.iu.edu, has been created to direct students to the campus where they intend to study and provide easy-to-use information on selecting and registering for summer classes. The university will be reaching out to students and parents through a variety of media to encourage them to take advantage of the summer savings.
The tuition discount is available at all Indiana University-administered campuses: IU Bloomington, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, IU East, IU Kokomo, IU Northwest, IU South Bend and IU Southeast, as well as IUPU Columbus.
For students who take a full academic course load in the summer, the tuition reductions will result in a savings ranging from more than $700 at regional campuses to about $1,000 at IUPUI and $1,050 at IU Bloomington. There is potential for even greater savings if students are able to reduce the time it takes to earn a degree, possibly shaving a semester or two off the time they are paying tuition.
Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers participated in the announcement of the tuition discount in October, and the initiative has been endorsed by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels.
Summer enrollment at IU campuses has remained relatively constant for the past decade. In 2011, approximately 43,000 students took at least one class during the summer, representing about 40 percent of IU's student population.
