IU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics awarded recertification

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MAY 19, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert announced today (May 19) that the National Collegiate Athletics Association has again certified IU's Division I intercollegiate athletics program.

The NCAA classification concludes a year-long self-study process in which all aspects of IU Bloomington's 24-sport athletics program were examined for compliance with operating principles adopted by the NCAA's Division I membership.

The study was conducted by a certification steering committee headed by Charlie Nelms, vice president for institutional development and student affairs, and was comprised of several IU academic and athletics officials.

The study results were then reviewed and evaluated by the NCAA to determine certification.

Specific areas of study included academic and fiscal integrity, governance, rules compliance, commitment to equity, student-athlete welfare and sportsmanship.

Herbert said the self-study process gave the university community a close look at all aspects of IU athletics, and he is very encouraged by what the committee found.

"Charlie Nelms and the study committee did a very thorough job," Herbert said. "We are committed to not only meeting NCAA standards, but meeting our own standards of excellence and integrity as well."

The purpose of athletics certification is to ensure integrity in the institution's athletics program and to assist institutions in improving their athletics departments. NCAA legislation mandating athletics certification was adopted in 1993, and IU completed its first certification self-study in 1997.

IU was one of 13 universities to be fully certified. Three others were certified with qualifications -- meaning problems were identified that must be corrected before full certification can be awarded.

In addition to Nelms and Herbert, members of the IU self-study steering committee were: J. Terry Clapacs, vice president and chief administrative officer; Bruce Jaffee, faculty athletics representative; Mary Ann Rohleder, associate athletics director; Chris Reynolds, associate athletics director; Dorothy Frapwell, university counsel; James C. Wimbush, associate dean of the faculties; James Perin, vice president and chief financial officer of the IU Foundation; Frederick F. Eichhorn Jr., president of the IU Board of Trustees; Daniel Maki, chair, athletics committee; Judy Palmer, vice president and chief financial officer; Sara McNabb, executive assistant to the president; David Nordloh, associate dean of the faculties; David Gallahue, dean of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; Curt Simic, president, IU Foundation; James Sherman, professor of psychology; Katie Pollom, volleyball student-athlete; and William Lumpkin, football student-athlete.
