Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies to commemorate 20 years with symposium

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 2, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies will commemorate its 20th year with a symposium at the IU Maurer School of Law on April 5 and 6.

Beginning with its first issue in fall 1993, the journal has studied the influence of globalization on both the scale of law and the growth of non-state actors in shaping legal processes.

"By focusing on these two factors, we have tried to advance understanding of the ways in which law, politics, culture and economics respond to and shape each other," said Alfred C. Aman Jr., Roscoe C. O'Byrne Professor at the IU Maurer School of Law and the journal's co-founder.

This year's symposium, "Globalization and Law: The Next Twenty Years," focuses on "law in the broadest sense as a site where globalization takes aspirational and institutional form, encounters critique and contestation, and shapes the practice of law as both academic discipline and professional art," Aman said.

Nearly two dozen leading scholars in political science, law and anthropology from around the world will participate in the symposium. Their papers will be published in a forthcoming issue of the journal.

Guided by a student editorial board, the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies is one of the few global or transnational journals that is both peer-reviewed and inclusive of globalization in the broadest sense. More than 600 Indiana Law alumni have participated in the journal during the past 20 years.

The symposium, which begins at 9 a.m. April 5, is open to the public. More information about the symposium and the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies can be found on its website, ijgls.indiana.edu.
