Workshop performance of new 'Alamo' musical part of IU's Summer Festival of the Arts

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 25, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A workshop performance of a new musical about the fated Battle of the Alamo, co-written by a professor in the Jacobs School of Music, will take the stage June 2 on Indiana University's Bloomington campus.

Summer Festival of the Arts

The event is a highlight of the university's second annual Summer Festival of the Arts, a 113-day celebration that features visual arts, music, cinema, dance and theater on the Bloomington campus. It was conceived as a way to support the creation of new arts events and showcase the vibrant cultural offerings at IU that help make Bloomington such a popular arts destination throughout the summer.

Timothy Noble, distinguished professor of voice at the Jacobs School of Music, wrote the music and lyrics for "Alamo," which will receive its first public reading at 8 p.m. June 2 in Auer Hall. The free event is open to the public and will include narration throughout.

"Alamo" focuses on events leading up to, during and following the 13-day siege that occurred at the former Texas mission in 1836 as told by Susannah Dickinson, one of the few survivors of the battle. The musical touches on universal themes that continue to be relevant, including undying love, truth versus myth, racism, heroism and the American Dream.

A Summer Music series hosted by the Jacobs School of Music as part of Summer Festival of the Arts include performances of all 16 string quartets by Beethoven; two concerts featuring renowned pianist Menahem Pressler; and three outdoor band concerts on the lawn of the Musical Arts Center. Details are available at music.indiana.edu/summer.
