IU spring semester enrollment at record levels

Enrollment at Indiana University is at record levels for a spring semester, both in numbers of students taking classes and in credit hours.

For the second semester of the 2001-02 academic year, 90,670 students enrolled in 1,000,493 credit hours on IU's eight campuses, according to official university enrollment figures released today (Feb. 1). Those totals represent an increase of 3.7 percent in the number of students and 4 percent in credit hours over the same semester last year. This is the first time IU has taught more than 1 million credit hours in a spring semester.

"We are pleased at the continued strong enrollment. At a time when a college degree has never been more valuable, it is good news that Indiana University is meeting the diverse educational needs of so many students on our eight campuses," said IU President Myles Brand.

Every IU campus reported both higher numbers of students and more credit hours taken than in the same semester last year. Five IU campuses -- Bloomington, IUPUI, East, Fort Wayne, and Southeast -- set spring semester records in both student head count and credit hours. IU South Bend also set a campus record for spring semester credit hour count.

At IU Bloomington, spring semester enrollment is 35,474, an increase of 1,171 or 3.4 percent from spring semester of the 2000-01 academic year. Enrollment figures for the other campuses are IUPUI, 26,995, up 1,034 or 4 percent; East, 2,332, up 103 or 4.6 percent; Fort Wayne, 5,821, up 326 or 5.9 percent; Kokomo, 2,497, up 12 or 0.5 percent; Northwest, 4,384, up 120 or 2.8 percent; South Bend, 6,910, up 229 or 3.4 percent; and Southeast, 6,257, up 266 or 4.4 percent.
