BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University officials expect a record 7,590 first-year students to enroll for classes this fall at IU Bloomington, breaking the previous mark set in 2008. And while data are still being compiled, it appears the freshman class will be one of the most diverse and talented in campus history.

"We believe the record numbers in the beginning class are indicative of IU's strong presence and reputation in our own state and region, and nationally and internationally as well," said David Johnson, IU Bloomington vice provost for enrollment management.

"Within this record class, we are especially pleased to have a projected increase in the number of under-represented minorities enrolling and in the number of countries represented by our international students," he added. "We continue to provide appropriate need- and merit-based aid to attract an academically distinguished class and work diligently to keep IU Bloomington affordable for students."

This is the seventh consecutive year in which freshman enrollment surpassed 7,000. The previous record for first-year students was 7,564, set in the fall of 2008. Total IU Bloomington enrollment, including undergraduate, graduate and professional students, is likely to be over 42,000 for the third straight year.

Approximately 61 percent of first-year students are Indiana residents. After Indiana, states sending the most students to IU Bloomington include Illinois, Ohio, California, New York and New Jersey.

Among international students, the largest number hail from China, South Korea, India, Canada and Mexico, in that order. The growth in students from under-represented populations includes increases in the number of African-American and Hispanic students.

President Michael A. McRobbie, first lady Laurie Burns McRobbie, Provost Lauren Robel and Dean of Students Harold "Pete" Goldsmith greeted students today as they arrived in Bloomington for official Move-In Day at residence halls. Welcome Week highlights include:

  • Freshman Induction at 2 and 4 p.m. today at the IU Auditorium, with McRobbie and Robel presiding. Freshmen will learn the words to "Hail to Old IU," make the Indiana Promise and take part in the induction picnic.
  • CultureFest from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at IU Auditorium. It's a celebration of diversity featuring live music and international cuisine.
  • Traditions & Spirit of IU, a cream-and-crimson-filled IU spirit party at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Assembly Hall.
  • New Student Service Day, a half-day of community service Saturday on campus and elsewhere in Bloomington. Participants will check in at 9 a.m. at Fine Arts 015.
  • Appearances throughout the week by IU's "party animals," representatives of the university's Street Smart campaign for personal safety.

Coming this fall at IU Bloomington and all IU campuses is a comprehensive financial literacy initiative aimed at giving students the tools they need to complete college without excessive debt. The program will include a dedicated website, mandatory educational modules, workshops, and individual advising and counseling.

Classes at IU Bloomington get under way Monday, Aug. 20. Unofficial first-day enrollment figures for the campus will be reported then, along with information about financial aid awarded to students and the academic profile of the freshman class.

First-day enrollment for all IU campuses will be reported the following week, and official fall 2012 figures will be available in early September.
