'Fall for Art' at IU Art Museum's seasonal exhibitions

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- During one of the best seasons to explore Indiana University's Bloomington campus, the IU Art Museum is encouraging visitors to "Fall for Art" with special exhibitions featuring embroidered textiles from China, contemporary landscape paintings and one of the nation's strongest university collections of German Expressionist works.

The three separate exhibitions will be on view Oct. 6 to Dec. 23 in the Special Exhibitions Gallery and the Judi and Milt Stewart Hexagon Gallery on the first floor of the museum. A full schedule of related programs is planned as well, including lectures, gallery talks and tours focused around the art and artists.
Exhibitions are:
- "Barry Gealt: Embracing Nature," which features 35 vibrant landscape paintings encompassing three decades of work, illuminating this much-esteemed artist and retired IU professor's embrace of the natural world. The exhibition is complemented by a fully illustrated color catalog with an essay by Rachel Perry, chief curator emeritus of the Indiana State Museum.
- "Pioneers and Exiles: German Expressionism at the Indiana University Art Museum," which traces the fascinating story of how the museum came to build one of the strongest collections of German Expressionist artworks held by any university art museum in the country. Forty-eight works from the collection -- including paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings by major artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Dix and Franz Marc -- will be on view. A fully illustrated catalog accompanies the exhibition.
- "Threads of Love: Baby Carriers From China's Minority Nationalities," which features a diverse selection of embroidered textiles, primarily baby carriers. These colorful textiles are decorated with auspicious symbols connoting good luck, good fortune, happy marriage and longevity, as well as images from the embroiderer's imagination.
Located in the heart of campus in a bold architectural masterpiece designed by the renowned I.M. Pei & Partners, the IU Art Museum houses a diverse permanent collection that includes ancient gold jewelry, Asian scrolls, African masks and paintings by Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso. The collection represents nearly every art-producing culture in the world from every period in history. Admission is free.
