BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The cast, crew and creative staff for the record-breaking Broadway musical production of "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical" will rehearse for their 2012-13 tour here in Bloomington before performing two shows at IU Auditorium.
Indiana University and Bloomington theater students will have the opportunity to observe the technical process, meet with company members and learn about staging a full-scale Broadway production. Then, students and community members alike can watch the Grinch puzzle out the true meaning of Christmas at IU Auditorium at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 and 16.
The musical broke box office records for two consecutive years on Broadway during its holiday engagements at the St. James and Hilton theaters in New York City. Thousands of families across America have been delighted by the heartwarming holiday musical, which The New York Times praised as "100 times better than any bedside story" and Gannett papers hailed as "A genius of a show! A total delight for both kids and adults."
The musical features the hit songs written by Albert Hague and Dr. Seuss from the original animated series: "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" and "Welcome Christmas." Max the Dog narrates as the mean and scheming Grinch, whose heart is "two sizes too small," decides to steal Christmas away from the holiday-loving Whos. Sets and costumes inspired by Dr. Seuss' original illustrations help transport audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville, while the music breathes new life into this timeless story. Stefan Karl, star of Nickelodeon's "LazyTown" (Robbie Rotten), will enchant audiences of all ages as the Grinch.
"This story holds such a special place in everyone's hearts, and 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical' brings the joy, the love and the festive spirit of this quintessential holiday book to life in a magical way through this elaborate, lavish production," IU Auditorium director Doug Booher said. "We are so honored to host the cast and crew of this amazing show as they prepare for what will surely be a remarkable show, and remarkable tour."
In addition, IU Auditorium has teamed up with Hoosier Hills Food Bank and will accept donations at the two performances to help those in need during the holiday season.
