IU's GLBT Alumni Association to gather for annual celebration

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jan. 28, 2013

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the fifth year in a row, the Indiana University Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Alumni Association's Celebration Weekend will coincide with the Bloomington Pride Film Festival during the weekend of Feb. 1 to 3.

"All faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends, please join us for this fabulous weekend and see for yourselves why IU has received 'five stars' and recently was ranked in the top 25 LGBT-friendly universities and colleges in the nation," GLBTAA president Mike Shumate said. "We're anticipating record crowds, including many university officials, in attendance. Come and see old friends, make new ones, and share in the celebration of the weekend."

In addition to the film festival, weekend highlights include a reception and silent auction at Grazie Italian Eatery; a social at IU's Lilly Library; and a Sunday brunch.

The second annual GLBTAA Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented during the Friday social at the Lilly Library to Jerry J. Burgdoerfer, BS'80, MBA'83, JD'83, a senior partner in the law firm Jenner & Block in Chicago. The 2012 award went to Shane Windmeyer, MS'97, executive director of Campus Pride.

"The annual GLBTAA gathering is a wonderful opportunity to recognize and celebrate IU Bloomington alumni," said IU Bloomington Provost Lauren Robel, JD'83, who will introduce the honoree at Friday's reception. "I am particularly delighted to participate in the ceremony honoring Jerry, who was my classmate at the IU Maurer School of Law and has gone on to lead an exemplary career."

J T. Forbes, BA'90, MPA'96, executive director and CEO of the IU Alumni Association, added that the GLBTAA is one of the IUAA's most active alumni groups.

"This is an event that many look forward to every year," Forbes said. "The group works to engage alumni from all eight IU campuses, to connect them with one another and back to their university. Our GLBT alumni truly make this a fabulous weekend, one both to reflect back and look forward to the many wonderful memories and accomplishments made at our Hoosier home."

Weekend events range in price from free to $20. To purchase tickets and register for events, visit the Celebration Weekend Web page or contact Erin Bruce, alumni service and events coordinator, at 812-856-7260 or eebruce@indiana.edu.

The GLBT Alumni Association is an affiliate group of the IU Alumni Association. The IU Alumni Association is dedicated to serving the university and its diverse alumni, students and friends.
