Ivy Tech, IU Center for the Study of Global Change partner on Global Learning Across Indiana project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feb. 4, 2013

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In view of our increasingly interconnected world, Indiana University's Center for the Study of Global Change and the Center for the Study of the Middle East are partnering with Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana to internationalize Ivy Tech's curriculum.

This three-year partnership, involving the integration of global learning outcomes and Arabic language instruction across Ivy Tech's 14 regions statewide, is an effort to ensure that Ivy Tech graduates will be global citizens and competitive in today's diverse workforce.

This initiative is funded by a $334,603 grant under the U.S. Department of Education's Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program. This funding will allow the partnership to broadly internationalize the Ivy Tech curriculum through focused course redesign, development of a systemwide Global Learning Certificate and offering of Modern Standard Arabic language instruction statewide. Together, these components create a strong infrastructure for global learning for multiple disciplines across the Ivy Tech system.

The project directors of Global Learning Across Indiana are Rebecca Nickoli, vice president for corporate college services at Ivy Tech, and Hilary Kahn, director of the Center for the Study of Global Change at IU Bloomington. Cigdem Balim Harding, associate director of the IU Center for the Study of the Middle East, will help guide the development of Arabic curriculum, and Michelle Henderson is the project coordinator.

According to Kahn, this initiative builds on an established partnership between the Center for the Study of Global Change and Ivy Tech Bloomington -- the Internationalization Collaborative Across Bloomington -- which facilitates curriculum internationalization on both campuses through professional development opportunities for IU Bloomington and Ivy Tech faculty members.

Global Learning Across Indiana represents a strategic expansion and will allow Ivy Tech to work toward its objectives of strengthening cultural diversity, global awareness and international competitiveness among faculty, staff and students. This project also represents a growing collaboration between IU and Ivy Tech Community College around issues of campus and curriculum internationalization.
