Collection of used items under way for Hoosier to Hoosier sale

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- With student move-out just around the corner, the IU Office of Sustainability is encouraging Indiana University Bloomington students to donate items to the Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale.
H2H officially kicked off its collection of reusable items on April 21. Drop-off locations are in every residence hall, and can receive donations until May 4. Students may also arrange for larger items to be picked up starting May 7, making it simple and easy to choose a socially and environmentally responsible alternative to throwing unwanted possessions.

The sale -- now in its fourth year -- accepts used clothing, furniture, housewares, books, partially used cleaning and hygiene products, unopened food, electronics and nearly everything else except mattresses.
Students wishing to donate items may:
- Drop them off in residence halls, with collection boxes available starting April 21. For a complete list of donation locations in the residence halls, visit this website.
- Arrange to have them picked up. For off-campus housing, students can ask their landlords about donation opportunities, or contact h2h@indiana.edu for a pickup. Please call several days in advance to allow for volunteer scheduling.
- Drop off items during designated collection times. The first drop-off day will be Monday, May 6, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Warehouse, located at 1525 S. Rogers St.
H2H is a reuse program that aims to divert reusable items from the landfill during student move-out. It also prevents wasteful resource consumption by selling collected items to students and community members in order to raise funds for local charities and other organizations. The program allows students to donate reusable items while helping their neighbors in need.
The 2013 H2H Community Sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 24 at The Warehouse, located at 1525 S. Rogers Street in Bloomington.
In 2012, H2H collected reusable items from IU's 12 residence halls, two Greek houses and multiple apartment complexes as well as numerous individual donors. In total, the volume intercepted was equivalent to roughly 35 tons.
In addition, the sale raised more than $29,000 (up from about $17,600 in 2011) for local charities. This year's proceeds will be allocated to support the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity and city and campus sustainability programs, as well as several other local organizations.
Approximately 2,500 students and residents of Bloomington and surrounding communities attended the 2012 event. More than 100 volunteers contributed hours on sale day, and dozens more were involved in sale preparations.
H2H is a partnership between the City of Bloomington's Department of Economic & Sustainable Development, Habitat for Humanity, IU Athletics, the IU Office of Sustainability, and IU Residential Programs & Services. Numerous local businesses also play a role.
