Steve Zegree Vocal Jazz Camp begins new life at IU

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 26, 2013

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Steve Zegree, the newly appointed Pam and Jack Burks Professor of Music at the Jacobs School, has quickly established his musical identity in Bloomington through his multiple performances with the IU Singing Hoosiers. In addition, Zegree has been instrumental in the creation of the Jacobs School's new major in Jazz Voice.

Another chapter in Zegree's activities at IU begins this summer with the first annual Steve Zegree Vocal Jazz Camp. Offered to high school and college students, teachers and professionals, rhythm section players (piano, bass and drums,) amateur and professional singers, the 2013 camp has welcomed more than 40 participants this week from 16 states around the U.S., as well as Switzerland and Sweden.

"I am proud and excited to host our first summer vocal jazz camp at the Jacobs School," said Zegree. "In addition to being privileged to work with the Singing Hoosiers, I am excited to participate in the establishment of new curriculum, making it possible for jazz singers to join jazz instrumentalists in the storied Department of Jazz Studies. The vocal jazz camp is an outgrowth of this exciting new offering and, with the recently formed Vocal Jazz Ensembles I & II that perform during the year, we look forward to building new audiences and fans of this very special art form."

The world-class staff supporting Zegree in his summer venture include IU colleagues Ly Wilder, Tim Noble, Raymond Wise, Dominick DiOrio and Patrice Madura, as well as guests Duane Davis, Michael Wheaton and Peter Eldridge (from New York Voices).

Concerts through the week of June 24 include nightly solo appearances with a jazz trio at the Serendipity club in downtown Bloomington and a final performance of the entire ensemble on Friday June 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. All concerts are free and open to the public.
