Massey appointed associate vice president for university academic planning and policy at IU

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Anne Massey has been named associate vice president for university academic planning and policy at Indiana University, effective Sept. 1, Executive Vice President for University Academic Affairs John Applegate has announced.

Massey is the Dean's Research Professor of information systems at IU's Kelley School of Business, where she also serves as the chair of Kelley's Doctoral Programs. She recently completed service as the associate vice provost for faculty and academic affairs.

She will assume the role held by Barbara Bichelmeyer, who was appointed interim chancellor of IU Southeast, effective July 1. Bichelmeyer will continue to serve as senior director of the IU Office of Online Education.

Massey's appointment will be for one year renewable to the recently renamed Office of the Executive Vice President for University Academic Affairs. Her previous experience in faculty affairs as associate vice provost on the Bloomington campus will serve her well, according to Applegate.

"Professor Massey is an experienced academic leader who will bring great skill and imagination to her new responsibilities in the Office of the Executive Vice President for University Academic Affairs," Applegate said. "I look forward to working with her as we continue the momentum started by Barb Bichelmeyer."

As associate vice provost, Massey assumed responsibilities that included oversight for campus-level promotion reviews, faculty development workshops and revisions of academic policies. In addition, drawing on her experience in the field of information systems, Massey led efforts to design and implement a campus-wide electronic promotion and tenure review and routing system, eDossier. She will be continuing this role over the next year in advance of a campus launch in 2014.

"I feel privileged to be involved with university-wide programs and projects that enhance a culture of excellence relative to discovery, learning and engagement."

She received her doctorate from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in decision sciences and engineering systems. Her research interests focus on technology-based service innovation, computer-supported collaborative work, e-health and IT implementation.

Massey has received research funding and support from numerous corporations, the National Science Foundation, and foundations including The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and HP Foundation. She has served as an associate editor for many journals, including Information Systems Research and Decision Sciences. She is also senior editor for AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction. She has published numerous articles in leading journals including MIS Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Decision Sciences and the Journal of Management Information Systems, among others.

Massey has been recognized throughout her career for excellence in teaching, receiving the IU Board of Trustees' Distinguished Teaching Award and Kelley's MBA Distinguished Faculty Teaching Excellence Award, and has been recognized by Bloomberg Businessweek as an Outstanding MBA Faculty Member.

The Office of the Executive Vice President for University Academic Affairs is responsible for implementing and leading university-wide academic policies and initiatives in collaboration with the campus leadership and faculty governance organizations, including the Office of Online Education; coordinating academic aspects of government relations; developing and supporting the collective vision and collaborative activities of IU's regional campuses; Public Safety and Institutional Assurance on all campuses; University Student Services and Systems, including University Institutional Research and Reporting; maintaining an accessible infrastructure for university policies and policy development; supporting the academic and faculty relations responsibilities of the Office of the President; and managing executive recruitment and review.
