Record collection effort promises biggest Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale yet

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- With less than a week until sale day, Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale organizers are gearing up for the biggest event yet.
The sale, which offers items collected during on- and off-campus student move-out, will take place this year at The Warehouse at 1525 S. Rogers St. in Bloomington from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. Admission is $5 before 9:30 a.m.
Since the project's inception in 2010, each H2H sale has seen record revenues and attendance. Last year's effort involved selling five semitrailers worth of student move-out merchandise, welcoming more than 2,500 shoppers and grossing $29,000. The 2013 collection effort yielded far more than expected, and volunteers from the university and community are busy sorting and organizing eight semitrailers worth of items at The Warehouse.

The sale is largely volunteer-powered, with the need for help increasing closer to the sale. Individuals interested in volunteering during the week leading up to or during sale day should visit the H2H volunteer site or email h2h@indiana.edu.
"We have developed a wonderful network to gather donations from IU residence centers, the Greek system and off-campus properties that has resulted in 25 percent more items offered at this year's sale," said Steve Akers, associate director for environmental operations at IU Residential Programs and Services. "In its fourth year, the sale will be bigger and better than ever."
Building on the work of IU Residential Programs and Services, which has for many years collected for reuse the furniture and household goods left behind by students moving out of IU Bloomington residence halls, the H2H effort was created to:
- Divert reusable items from the landfill during student move-out.
- Prevent additional resource consumption by selling collected items to students and community members.
- Raise funds for local charities and partner agency sustainability efforts.
"H2H is both about diverting waste from the landfill and about getting students to rethink their purchasing habits," said Jacqui Bauer, sustainability coordinator for the City of Bloomington. "It's all about getting IU students to engage more and to think about what an enormous impact their actions have on the Bloomington community."
The H2H sale is open to the public. Items will be priced to sell, and all transactions will be cash only.
H2H is one of many stops along the Bloomington Resale Trail, which involves multiple organizations that participate in a city-wide garage sale on Aug. 24.
H2H parking is available at two locations near The Warehouse. Parking directly in front of The Warehouse is reserved for people with handicapped parking stickers and shoppers picking up furniture. More information is available in responses to frequently asked questions.
Hoosier to Hoosier is a partnership between Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, the City of Bloomington, the IU Office of Sustainability and IU Residential Programs and Services. Sale day proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity and sustainability efforts at the City of Bloomington and Indiana University.
