IU and Purdue begin annual ‘battle for blood’

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- This fall, alumni and fans of Indiana and Purdue universities can truly say that the schools' rivalry is in their blood.
The annual Indiana vs. Purdue Blood Donor Challenge, a friendly competition that encourages Indiana residents to donate blood, began Monday (Oct. 3) and and lasts through Nov. 11. Participants can donate blood in the name of either university at Indiana Blood Center, American Red Cross or South Bend Medical Foundation blood donor centers.
The university with the most blood donations will be honored at the Old Oaken Bucket football game between IU and Purdue on Nov. 19.
This year's competition is the ninth Blood Donor Challenge. Purdue won last year's contest with a record number of 5,164 units of donated blood. Purdue leads the series 6-2.
Donors can go to any of 23 participating blood donor centers. The Indiana Blood Center operates 14 locations in Anderson, Columbus, Evansville, Kokomo, Lafayette, Shelbyville, Terre Haute and the Indianapolis area, including locations in Avon, Carmel and Fishers.
Donors also can go to the South Bend Medical Foundation in South Bend and Mishawaka and to American Red Cross locations in Bloomington, Columbus, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Goshen, Jeffersonville and Merrillville.

The Blood Donor Challenge is sponsored by the Indiana Blood Center, the IU Alumni Association and the Purdue Alumni Association, in conjunction with the American Red Cross and the South Bend Medical Foundation.
