Poet Mari Evans to visit IU Bloomington

Event part of IU's Black History Month celebration

Renowned African American poet Mari Evans will return to Indiana University Bloomington, where she once served as a faculty member, for a public reading on Thursday (Feb. 21) at 7:30 p.m. in Room A201 of the new Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center. The reading is free and open to the public.

Sponsored by the African American Culture Center Library, Evans' reading is a part of the ongoing Black History Month celebration at IU.

Evans, who taught in the 1970s at both IU Bloomington and at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, was well known in the Indianapolis community. She now lives in California. She is the author of a number of significant books, including I Am A Black Woman, A Dark and Splendid Mass and Nightstar, along with several others.

She has written works for children, including Singing Black: Alternative Nursery Rhymes, as well as screenplays, literary criticism and other works.

"It's quite an honor to have one of the major African American poets in the country to read on our campus," said Associate Vice Chancellor Gloria Gibson. "Mari Evans' appearance is a celebration not only of great poetry but of a significant homecoming of one of IU's finest. It's going to be a great evening."
