Media advisory: IU president to speak at Indy King Day events

EDITORS: Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert will speak at two major events Monday (Jan. 16) in Indianapolis that celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and his legacy.

Herbert will join Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Eugene White in speaking at the 13th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Breakfast at George Washington Community School, 2215 W. Washington St. The theme for the event, which will last from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (program begins at 9:30 a.m.), is "Peace in the Streets: Stop the Violence." More than 1,000 young people, ages 12 to 16, have been invited to the breakfast, which is sponsored by Christimore House. For more information about this event, call 317-327-7902.

At 12:15 p.m., Herbert will give a major address at "Courage, Wisdom, Praise," a two-hour King commemoration celebration at the Madame Walker Theatre Center, 617 Indiana Ave. Herbert will speak at length following brief remarks from Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, Indianapolis Deputy Mayor Steve Campbell, Indiana Rep. Carolene Mays, Indianapolis Urban League President Joe Slash and Madame Walker Theatre Board Chairman Larry Smith. The annual event, which is free and open to the public, also will showcase several Indianapolis church mass choirs, dance ensembles and literary artists. The event will be preceeded by a "Freedom Walk on the Avenue" from the Indianapolis Urban League Building to the theater, beginning at noon.
