IU President Adam Herbert announces formation of COAS dean search committee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jan. 20, 2006

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert today (Jan. 20) announced the formation of a 10-member academic search committee to fill the position of dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The search committee will be chaired by Lauren Robel, dean of the IU School of Law-Bloomington. The panel will review applicants for the position and submit a slate of finalists to Herbert and Michael A. McRobbie, who will become IU's first provost on Feb. 1.

"Our intention is to move quickly on this position because it is so critical to the restructuring goals approved last week by the Board of Trustees," Herbert said.

The position of dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will become vacant July 1 when the current dean, Kumble Subbaswamy (known to everyone as "Swamy"), will leave for the University of Kentucky in Lexington to become provost of that institution.

"Dean Swamy has given outstanding leadership to the College for the past five years, and has shown a remarkable sensitivity to the importance of the very broad range of disciplines in the College," McRobbie said. "These are characteristics that will be needed in his successor in order to both build on the strong position the College is now in and to take it forward to become even stronger."

In addition to committee chair Robel, committee members (with their departments) who have been invited to serve are:

  • Andrea Ciccarelli (French & Italian)
  • David Clemmer (Chemistry)
  • Susan Gubar (English)
  • Jeff Isaac (Political Science)
  • Portia Maultsby (Ethnomusicology)
  • Beth Raff (Biology)
  • Jane Rogan (Professional Staff Council)
  • Linda Smith (Psychology)
  • Betsey Henke (student recommended by the IU Student Association)
