IU United Way campaign surpasses goal

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 3, 2006

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- More than $637,000 was raised for this year's United Way campaign in Monroe County from employees at Indiana University's Bloomington campus, university officials announced today (March 3).

The Bloomington campus employees exceeded their goal by more than $22,000. The IU campaign constitutes more than 43 percent of the United Way of Monroe County annual campaign. The results were verified last month and sent to IU President Adam W. Herbert.

"The true spirit of Indiana University is reflected in the generosity of its faculty, staff and students," Herbert said. "The United Way is an excellent example of this stewardship. Every IU employee and student who participated in this drive deserves congratulations for the success we have achieved."

Herbert and his wife, Karen, recently hosted a recognition reception at Bryan House for leadership donors.

The Vanguard Leadership of donors contributing $1,000 or more involved 189 IUB employees. More than half of the county-wide givers at this level were from IUB, said Kirk White, IU's director of community relations.

IU campaign co-chairs were Gerardo Gonzalez, dean of the School of Education, and Lauren Robel, dean of the School of Law.

"We had excellent volunteer participation this year," Gonzalez said. "Over 200 IU employees served as United Way campaign volunteers."

Robel noted that the proceeds of this campaign will enable many Monroe County charitable and service organizations to maintain their operations.

"This shows that Indiana University employees make the needs of the entire community a top priority," she said. "Thousands of people will benefit from this generosity."
