IU Dean of Students Awards announced
Nine people and one program will be recognized at an award ceremony on Wednesday (April 10) for their contributions to the Division of Student Affairs at Indiana University. The awards recognize outstanding contributions by students, staff, faculty and individuals in the Bloomington community.
The Dean of Students Awards Reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the University Club in the Indiana Memorial Union and is open to the campus community. Nominations for the awards are made by the division's staff members, and the winners are chosen by an award selection committee. The awards will be presented by Dean of Students Richard N. McKaig.
The Division of Student Affairs includes the Dean of Students Office, Alcohol and Drug Information Center, Career Development Center, Disabled Student Services, Health Center, Parents Association, Student Activities Office, Student Advocates Office, Student Ethics and Anti-Harassment Programs, Student Legal Services and Veterans Affairs.
The recipients and their awards are:
-- Student Award: Ryan McCrocklin, senior in biology from Pendleton, Ind.
-- Division Student Staff Award: Shannon Thake, senior in theatre and drama from Santa Claus, Ind.
-- Gordon Faculty Award: Carolyn Walters, head librarian, Undergraduate Library, IU Libraries
-- Staff Award: Kirstine Lindemann, assistant dean, College of Arts and Sciences
-- Division Support Staff Award: Kim Sizemore, department secretary, Disabled Student Services
-- Shaffer Professional Staff Award: Anne Reese, director, Health and Wellness, IU Health Center
-- Schreck Community Award: Joe Stebbins, executive director, Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington, Monroe County
-- Campus Program Award: Greek Affairs Presidents Academy, Student Activities Office
In addition, special recognition will be given to Priscilla Osborne, administrative services coordinator in the Dean of Students Office, on her upcoming retirement after 43 years of service to IU, and to Alan McNabb, director of the Career Development Center and the Arts and Sciences Placement Office, for his 34 years of service to IU.
Several of the awards are designated in honor of the former deans of students who have served at the IU Bloomington campus. The Special Merit Award is named for Col. Raymond L. Shoemaker, dean of students from 1946 to 1955. The Division Professional Staff Award is named for Robert H. Shaffer, dean of students from 1955 to 1969. The Community Award is named for Thomas C. Schreck, dean of students from 1969 to 1981. The Faculty Award is named for Michael V. W. Gordon, dean of students from 1981 to 1991.
