Indiana University selects Chancellor's Scholars

Indiana University Bloomington has selected 15 of its top students as Chancellor's Scholars for the 2001-02 academic year.

The Chancellor's Scholarship honors the best undergraduate students in each school on campus. This distinction involves more than a student's grade point average. It also takes into consideration how students excel academically by performing well, taking leadership roles in different courses, doing outstanding work on research projects and other factors.

Faculty in each school select the student who has most distinguished himself or herself in all phases of academics.

This year's Chancellor's Scholars are:

-- Angela Beale of Delphi, Ind., a junior in the Kelley School of Business

-- Andrew Cook of Louisville, Ky., a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences

-- Kiju Christian Hansen of Fort Wayne, Ind., a sophomore in the School of Informatics

-- Shirley Johnson of Bloomington, Ind., a senior in the School of Continuing Studies

-- Ashley Keen of Greenfield, Ind., a junior in the School of Journalism

-- Katarzyna Mastalerz of Bloomington, Ind., a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences

-- Paul Mitchell of West Lafayette, Ind., a junior in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs

-- Creston Myers of Lewellen, Neb., a third-year student in the School of Optometry

-- Emily Ray of Wallingford, Pa., a graduate student in the School of Library and Information Science

-- Todd Relue of Granger, Ind., a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences

-- Christine Stejskal of Carmel, Ind., a junior in the School of Education

-- Nicholas Surmacz of Granger, Ind., a junior in the Kelley School of Business

-- Amanda Swango of Cincinnati, Ohio, a junior in the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation

-- Song Zhang of Jackson Heights, N.Y., a junior in the School of Music

-- Zhiqiang "Zack" Zhao of Dandong, Liaoning, China, a second-year student in the School of Law-Bloomington

The award, which includes a special book from the student's academic discipline or membership in a professional society, also carries a scholarship. Presentations were made by IU Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Stephens Brehm and school deans at a recent campus reception. The students selected are in their next-to-last year of study.
