Holland, Butler, Goodbody scholarship recipients announced

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Dean of Students Office has announced the Spring 2002 recipients of the Beryl Showers Holland Fellowships and the Susan Butler and Clara Jovan Goodbody scholarships.

Holland Fellowships have been awarded to Donald "Donnie" William Buck II of Bedford, Ind., and to Raquel Rae Ramirez of Yorktown, Ind. Rebecca Ann Hoban of Munster, Ind., is this year's recipient of the Butler Scholarship and Courtney Marie Johnson of Lake Station, Ind., received the Goodbody Scholarship.

The Beryl Showers Holland Fellowships

Holland Fellowships are awarded by the state organization of Kappa, Kappa, Kappa Inc. Applicants must be seniors who will graduate in May from the IU Bloomington campus and who plan to enter graduate or professional school in the fall. They must also be Indiana residents and have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.7 or better (out of a 4-point scale). The awards are based on excellence in an academic field, future promise in graduate or professional study and community and campus service.

The first-place Holland Fellowship, in the amount of $2,000, was awarded to Buck, who graduated from IU Bloomington on May 4 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. He plans to study medicine at either the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine or at the University of Chicago. He plans to specialize in pediatrics and sports medicine.

Buck is a member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key National Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. He was an undergraduate teaching intern in biology, an associate instructor in chemistry and was a member of the I.U. football team.

The second-place Holland Fellowship, in the amount $1,000, was awarded to Ramirez, who graduated from IU Bloomington on May 4. She majored in criminal justice and psychology and will study law at the I.U. School of Law-Bloomington.

Ramirez was a Herman B Wells Scholar and a Senator Richard Lugar Scholar. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board Senior Honor Society, Golden Key National Honor Society and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.

Susan Butler and Clara Jovan Goodbody scholarships

The Susan Butler and Clara Jovan Goodbody scholarships are awarded to graduating senior women with a 3.7 grade-point average or better (on a 4-point scale). Recipients also must be U.S. citizens. The Butler award is given to a graduating senior woman for outstanding scholarship and character. The Goodbody award is given to a graduating senior woman for use in pursuing graduate study.

The Butler Scholarship, in the amount of $3,000, went to Hoban, who graduated from IU Bloomington on May 4. She majored in biology and minored in general honors notation, chemistry, psychology and Spanish. She will study medicine at the University of Michigan.

Among Hoban's many activities and honors are her memberships in Blue Key Honor Society, Order of Omega Greek Honors Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key Honor Society and Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medical Honors Fraternity. She also is a member of Phi Mu sorority, was lead saxophonist in the IU all-campus band and completed overseas study at the University of Adelaide in Australia.

The Goodbody Scholarship, in the amount of $3,000, went to Johnson, who graduated from IU Bloomington on May 4. She majored in biology and history and minored in chemistry. She will study medicine at either the I.U. School of Medicine or Northwestern University.

Among her many activities and honors, Johnson is a McNair scholar and a Lugar scholarship recipient. She was in the Minority Achievers Program, a substitute teacher for Head Start and is a published poet.
