IU releases overall enrollment statistics for 2006-07

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sept. 6, 2006

Note: Enrollment and credit-hour figures for the Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne (IPFW) campus are recorded and reported by Purdue University.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Fall enrollment figures for Indiana University's eight campuses were released today (Sept. 6). They show an increase in students at the Bloomington campus as well as an increase at IU Southeast in New Albany, but overall total student enrollment is slightly down. The trend toward higher course loads continues, however. An increase in the number of credit hours students are taking represents an all-time high for IU.

A total of 97,959 students are enrolled in a record 1,127,005.8 credit hours at eight IU campuses. From figures one year ago, that is minus 0.6 percent change in enrollment, or 584 students, down from last fall's number of 98,543. The increase in credit hours is plus 0.1 percent, or 1,322.8 hours, up from last year's total of 1,125.683.

Decline in general enrollment can be attributed to various factors, including program changes on some campuses and also to increased Ivy Tech enrollments.

"For the IU Kokomo campus, phasing out the A.S.N. (Associate of Science in Nursing) program in order to more fully concentrate on educating bachelor's degree nurses for our community has caused a temporary dip in enrollment numbers," said Ruth J. Person, chancellor at IU Kokomo. "The revisions in our program emphasis meet the increased need for highly educated nurses in our region.

"We expect that enrollment will increase in fall 2007 in response to the recent introduction of several new degree programs including the B.S. in informatics, the B.S. in early childhood education, and the B.S. in medical imaging technology," she said.

At IU East, Chancellor David Fulton said that higher Ivy Tech enrollment may have influenced enrollment there.

"The downturn at IU East is in the freshman and sophomore classes," Fulton said. "Ivy Tech, with whom we share the Richmond campus, has reported an enrollment increase of approximately 20 percent.

"Since we have full articulation with Ivy Tech--Region 9 programs, and we transfer over 70 courses, we are presuming at this point that some students who in years past would have enrolled with us are choosing to pursue the first two years of their college careers at Ivy Tech," he continued. "Once we receive the details behind the reported numbers we will be able to determine if this is in fact the case."
