Celebrate 'Glory Days' at IU Homecoming, Oct. 26-28

IU vs. MSU and the Beach Boys headline activities

Oct. 18, 2006

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University alumni, students and friends are invited to experience IU's "Glory Days" on Homecoming weekend, Oct. 26-28 (Thursday-Saturday), in Bloomington.

Highlights of the weekend include the "Yell Like Hell" student-spirit competition, the 48th annual Homecoming parade and pep rally, the annual Homecoming luncheon, the Indiana vs. Michigan State football game and a Homecoming concert by the Beach Boys.

Homecoming festivities get underway with a student spirit competition, "Yell Like Hell," on Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m., in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union. "Yell Like Hell," sponsored by the Student Alumni Association, offers students a jump-start on showing their spirit for Homecoming weekend. Participating groups prepare three-minute acts -- skits, dance routines, musical numbers and lip-syncing. The act with the most Homecoming spirit will be declared the winner. In addition, two special acts will join student groups -- a cappella performers Straight No Chaser and Ladies First. Admission to "Yell Like Hell" is free, and the general public is invited to attend. For more information on "Yell Like Hell," contact the Student Alumni Association at 812-855-SAA1.

On Friday, the 48th-annual Homecoming Parade will feature first-year IU women's basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack as grand marshal. The parade, which forms on Rose Avenue next to Willkie Quad between Third Street and Seventh Street, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Turning right onto East Third Street, it will advance to Indiana Avenue and end at Sample Gates, just in time for the pep rally.

Beginning at 6:30, the pep rally in front of Sample Gates at the corner of Indiana Avenue and Kirkwood Avenue will feature IU football coach Terry Hoeppner. He will be joined by the IU football team, the cheerleaders, the RedSteppers and the Marching Hundred to prepare fans for Saturday's game against the Michigan State University Spartans.

Also on Friday after the pep rally, Straight No Chaser, IUAA's popular a cappella group, will present a Homecoming concert, 9 p.m., in the Indiana Memorial Union's Alumni Hall. The show is free for Student Alumni Association members with proof of membership; admission is $10 for alumni and the general public. Tickets are available at the door or in the Student Alumni Association Office at the DeVault Alumni Center, 1000 E. 17th St., beginning Oct. 23. Cash only, please. For more information, call 812-855-9263.

Alumni and friends also are invited to the 19th-annual Homecoming Luncheon on Saturday, 10:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m., at Mellencamp Pavilion, northeast of Memorial Stadium. Entertainment will be provided by the Singing Hoosiers, the IU cheerleaders and the alumni band. Speakers will include IU Alumni Association President and CEO Ken Beckley, IU President Adam Herbert, IU Athletics Director Rick Greenspan and IU Foundation President Curt Simic. Homecoming weekend's football game pits Indiana's Hoosiers agains the Michigan State Spartans in Memorial Stadium on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for noon. Two hours prior to kickoff, fans are invited to "The Walk," an opportunity to cheer on the Hoosier players and coaches when they arrive for the game at the corner of Woodlawn Avenue and 17th Street. The Hoosiers will walk to the stairs on the west side of Assembly Hall, where they will be greeted by the Marching Hundred, IU cheerleaders and fans.

During pre-game and halftime ceremonies, the 2006 Homecoming king and queen will be introduced, and trophies will be presented to the student teams that place first and second in the Homecoming competitions. Homecoming weekend culminates appropriately and in true Glory Days style with a tribute to "unfading youth" -- a show featuring the Beach Boys. As the group's promotional material declares, "To these guys, the beach isn't just a place where the surf comes to play -- it's where life is renewed and made whole again." The Beach Boys will perform Saturday at 8 p.m. at the IU Auditorium, 1211 E. Seventh St. Tickets are available by calling the IU Auditorium at 812-855-1103. Or, go to
