Oct. 30, 2006
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Geological Society of America gave its highest service award to Indiana University Bloomington Geological Sciences Department Chair Abhijit Basu at the professional society's annual meeting last week (Oct. 22-25).
The award specifically acknowledges Basu's expansion of the society's publications program. The number of books published by the GSA has doubled during Basu's 10-year editorial term. Basu has also been on GSA's publications committee for 10 years.
"Basu has a long and distinguished record of service to the geosciences, both with the Geological Society of America and internationally," said GSA Executive Director Jack Hess. "His hard work, high standards of quality, and enthusiasm have helped make the GSA publications program the success it is today. We are delighted to honor him with this Distinguished Service Award."
Basu has chaired IUB's Geological Sciences Department since 2003. His research interests transect both the sedimentary and stratigraphical, but he's been particularly keen on studying differences in rock formation on Earth, the Moon, and Mars, among others. Basu has previously won distinguished service awards from Indiana University and the Cultural Association of Bengal (North America). He received his geology Ph.D. from IU Bloomington in 1975. A committed educator, Basu holds the Herman B. Wells Endowed Professorship.
The Geological Society of America, founded in 1888, is a scientific society with 20,000 members representing academia, government and industry in more than 85 countries. Through its meetings, publications and programs, GSA enhances the professional growth of its members and promotes the geosciences in the service of humankind. Headquartered in Boulder, Colo., GSA also fosters public dialogue on geoscience issues and supports all levels of earth science education.
