BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert issued the following statement today in recognition of former IU men's basketball coach Bob Knight achieving the most wins in NCAA Division I history.
"On behalf of Indiana University and its Board of Trustees, I am very proud to extend our congratulations to Coach Bob Knight on the extraordinary career achievement he realized today in winning his 880th NCAA Division I men's basketball game. He has now passed the legendary Dean Smith as the most winning Division I men's basketball coach in NCAA basketball history. This is truly a remarkable feat.
"Indiana University fans have always been proud of the record of team success that Coach Knight achieved here in Bloomington. With high graduation rates, 661 wins, three national championships and 11 Big Ten titles, he established a tradition of both academic and athletic excellence for which we are very grateful.
"On behalf of the IU family, I wish Coach Knight continued success."
