IU to host more than 7,000 Boy Scouts at national conference
More than 7,000 Boy Scouts and adult leaders from throughout the United States, Europe and Asia are expected on the Indiana University campus for the National Order of the Arrow Conference from Saturday (July 27) through Aug. 1.
The Order of the Arrow is the Boy Scouts of America's national brotherhood of honor campers. Those attending will be involved in a multitude of activities and events including sports competitions, leadership development, training and education. Officials said the emphasis will be on training, fun and fellowship. Sporting events will include basketball, volleyball, running, golf and soccer. Training sessions will range from being an efficient officer to the meaning of the customs and traditions of the Order of the Arrow. The theme is "Test Yourself and So Discover."
This is the ninth visit to the IU campus for the biennial conference since the first Order of the Arrow national event was staged here in 1948. IU officials said this is the largest of some 120 education-related conferences held annually on the Bloomington campus and the largest event since the last NOAC conference in 1996. The conference will be headquartered in the Indiana Memorial Union, and the estimated 7,300 scouts will reside in 10 IU residence halls while using a multitude of facilities on the campus.
