BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Elizabeth Adams of LaPorte, Ind., an incoming freshman at Indiana University, has been selected by the university as a Wells Scholar. The scholarship, named in honor of the late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university.

Wells Scholars receive full tuition, fees and a living stipend for four years of study on the IU Bloomington campus. The program also offers special seminars, an optional year of study abroad and support for a summer research project or internship. The program emphasizes close interaction with faculty, academic and career advising, opportunities for community service and contact with distinguished visitors.

Wells Scholars are selected for having demonstrated character, leadership and distinction, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Adams is the first Wells Scholar from LaPorte High School, where she earned distinction as co-valedictorian. She also was a Duneland Academic Conference All-Star, a Hoosier Girls State delegate and a Bausch & Lomb Outstanding Science Student.

She was a four-year member of the National Forensics League, the Academic Decathlon team, the Academic Super Bowl team, and the Spell Bowl team, and a two-year member of the Junior Engineering and Technological Society team. She also was a State Super Bowl finalist and participated in the Envirothon Quiz Bowl, Knowledge Masters and Science Olympiad.

Adams was a four-year member of Student Council, serving as Student Council president her senior year. She also served as class treasurer for two years. In addition, she was a member of marching, pep, and jazz bands, as well as a member of the Spanish club and math club. She was a member and officer of the speech and debate society, and a three-year member and co-captain of the varsity swim team.

She has been selected to participate in the IU Science, Technology, and Research Scholars (STARS) Program and plans to major in biochemistry.
