BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Julie Jochim of Owensville, Ind., an incoming freshman at Indiana University, has been selected by the university as a Wells Scholar. The scholarship, named in honor of the late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university.
Wells Scholars receive full tuition, fees and a living stipend for four years of study on the IU Bloomington campus. The program also offers special seminars, an optional year of study abroad and support for a summer research project or internship. The program emphasizes close interaction with faculty, academic and career advising, opportunities for community service and contact with distinguished visitors.
Wells Scholars are selected for having demonstrated character, leadership and distinction, both inside and outside of the classroom.
Jochim is the first Wells Scholar from Gibson Southern High School, where she earned distinction as the salutatorian of her class and as the recipient of the St. Maria Goretti Catholic Youth Award. She placed first in science in the State Beta Convention and qualified for the national competition.
Jochim has received numerous art awards, including the Oakland City University Millennium Art Show best in show and State Beta Conference best of black pencil drawing, best of colored pencil drawing, and best in show.
She was a three-year varsity member of the swim team, two of which she served as captain, and was named most valuable player on the team. She was a four-year varsity member of both the cross country team and the track team.
Jochim was a state qualifier in track for the 1600-meter relay team and was a member of the All-State Academic cross country and track teams. She was a ten-year member of 4-H and a member and officer of her county's 4-H Junior Leaders.
At her school, she was a member of the Beta and pep clubs and a member and officer of the science and art clubs. She served as class treasurer her junior year and class reporter her senior year. She was also a member of her church choir and youth group.
