Crown Point's Khalid selected as Wells Scholar at Indiana University

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Asma Khalid of Crown Point, Ind., an incoming freshman at Indiana University, has been selected by the university as a Wells Scholar. The scholarship, named in honor of the late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university.
Wells Scholars receive full tuition, fees and a living stipend for four years of study on the IU Bloomington campus. The program also offers special seminars, an optional year of study abroad and support for a summer research project or internship. The program emphasizes close interaction with faculty, academic and career advising, opportunities for community service and contact with distinguished visitors.
Wells Scholars are selected for having demonstrated character, leadership and distinction, both inside and outside of the classroom.
Khalid is the first Wells Scholar from Crown Point High School, where she graduated as valedictorian and served as editor-in-chief of her school newspaper. She also served as a high school columnist for the Post-Tribune newspaper.
She was a three-year Kiwanis Scholar and won the Harvey Award for first place in Indiana in the advertising design category as well as second place in Indiana in the community leadership category.
Khalid earned additional distinction as a Purdue University Junior Scholar in English, French and social studies and was Hoosier Girls State keynote speaker. She was a member of the speech team and placed eighth in original oratory at the state competition. Additionally, she was a member of the National Forensics League and French club and a member and officer of the Key Club.
She served as president of her youth group for three years and as secretary for one year. She was a varsity member of the tennis team, serving as co-captain her senior year.
She plans to pursue both journalism and political science majors.
