BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert today (March 7) announced that he has chosen Tom Martz to become the next president and chief executive officer of the IU Alumni Association. Martz will begin his new duties April 1.
Martz, currently vice president for advancement at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, has deep roots in Indiana. He grew up in Bloomington and is a 1971 graduate of IU Bloomington. He served as director of the Indiana University Student Foundation from 1979-83, where one of his principal responsibilities was organizing the Little 500 Bicycle Race. He also worked for the IU Alumni Association in several capacities from 1977-79, and before that was a tennis professional and racquet club manager in Kokomo.
"I am delighted that we have attracted Tom Martz back to Indiana," Herbert said. "Tom is an outstanding professional who knows Indiana University well from his days as a student, alumni organizer and director of the IU Student Foundation."
At the University of Alabama, Martz has responsibility for alumni affairs, development, marketing and strategic communications, public relations and university events.
"He has parlayed his IU and private sector experiences into a very successful career as a senior university administrator with major responsibilities for alumni relations, public relations and fund-raising," Herbert said. "His extensive experience, creative leadership skills, warm personality and love of IU once again will be put into service for his alma mater. Both President-elect McRobbie and I are convinced that Tom will elevate the IU Alumni Association to even higher levels of quality and service to the university and our alumni."
Martz replaces Ken Beckley, who retired Jan. 31 after five years in the top alumni post. With some 480,000 living alumni, IU has one of the largest alumni networks in the world.
"I am truly honored to be chosen for this position," Martz said. "It has long been a dream of mine to return home to Indiana and once again be part of Indiana University."
Martz was recommended to Herbert by a 13-member search committee headed by Judith G. Palmer, IU vice president and chief financial officer.
"We looked at many well qualified and excellent applicants," Palmer said, "but Tom had both the senior executive management experience and the strong record of accomplishment that we were seeking, plus the added benefit of an Indiana background. Tom will continue to provide the same type of dynamic leadership that we enjoyed with Ken Beckley."
Before going to the University of Alabama in 2005, Martz held several administrative positions at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, including vice chancellor for university relations. Martz also worked in development positions at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Rockhurst University, Kansas City, Missouri; University of California, Berkeley; and University of San Diego.
Martz and his wife, Mary, plan to reside in Bloomington.
