Winnetka's Wongsarnpigoon selected as Wells Scholar at Indiana University

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Rose Wongsarnpigoon of Winnetka, Ill., an incoming freshman at Indiana University, has been selected by the university as a Wells Scholar. The scholarship, named in honor of the late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university.
Wells Scholars receive full tuition, fees and a living stipend for four years of study on the IU Bloomington campus. The program also offers special seminars, an optional year of study abroad and support for a summer research project or internship. The program emphasizes close interaction with faculty, academic and career advising, opportunities for community service and contact with distinguished visitors.
Wells Scholars are selected for having demonstrated character, leadership and distinction, both inside and outside of the classroom.
A National Merit Scholar, Wongsarnpigoon graduated from New Trier High School, where she was the recipient of the Outstanding Volunteer Award. She also received honorable mention in the National Spanish Exam, and was the recipient of the Rensselaer Math and Science Award.
An accomplished flutist, Wongsarnpigoon received top ratings in the Illinois state music competition and was a member of her school's wind ensemble. She was a member and officer of the International Club, serving as publicity manager her junior and senior year and she was a member of the Art Club.
She was a member of Asian Youth Social Service, through which she volunteered as a tutor for inner-city students. In addition, Rose volunteered for the March of Dimes and at her school as a writing center tutor. She was selected as a senior teacher's aid in algebra.
Wongsarnpigoon intends to major in elementary education.
