BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The African American Dance Company of Indiana University's African American Arts Institute will present its annual spring concert on Saturday (April 14) at 8 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave, Bloomington.

The African American Dance Company captures and delivers the spirit of dance styles of the African Diaspora through its energy, rhythm, precision and grace. The company's repertoire includes original choreography in a fusion of modern, jazz, African and Latin American dance styles.

Hailed by the Indiana Daily Student as "the best kept secret in Bloomington," the African American Dance Company has met with enthusiastic acclaim in its more than 20-year history. The Bloomington Herald-Times added, "Dancing, as performed by the talented IU African American Dance Company is an experience that is uplifting and fun, to be watched and savored by many. The enthusiasm of the young dancers was captivating. Iris Rosa, director and choreographer, is gifted in using the many talents of the IU dancers."

Rosa is associate professor in the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies. She has taught dance at the University of Ghana in West Africa, and has studied Afro-Cuban dance and music in Havana, Matanzas and Guantanamo, Cuba. She is a founding member of Sancocho: Music and Dance Collage, a performing ensemble featuring African diasporic music and dance based in the Indianapolis area.

Tickets to the performance are $15 for adults, $10 for children and students, and $5 for IU students with advance purchase (limit two per IU I.D.). Tickets are available at the Sunrise Box Office, 114 E. Kirkwood, Bloomington. For more information, call 812-323-3020.

In its 32 years, the African American Arts Institute has made a vital contribution to the cultural diversity of Indiana University by preserving, promoting and celebrating African American arts traditions. The institute's current executive director is Charles E. Sykes.
