IU Writers' Conference celebrates 67th year
Workshops led by nationally known writers
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 14, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Already a hotbed of creative energy, the Indiana University Bloomington campus will play host to approximately 100 additional poets, fiction and non-fiction writers from June 10-15.
Now in its 67th year, the Indiana University Writers' Conference (IUWC) annually attracts an impressive lineup of prominent writers and students of creative writing. This year's faculty includes Heather McHugh, Lee Martin, Khaled Mattawa, Matthew Klam, Catherine Bowman, Nicholas Dawidoff, Crystal Wilkinson and Adam Langer. Workshops fill quickly, so anyone interested in taking classes is encouraged to register as soon as possible.
Bob Bledsoe, who is in his second year as director of the IUWC, says that approximately 25 percent of the students return from year to year -- and for a good reason.
"Summer writing programs are magical," Bledsoe said. "The IUWC has a history of including both IU faculty and visiting writers to teach classes and workshops. Our annual summer reading series exposes Bloomington to some of the best literary artists working today."
By day, workshops -- for the beginner to the working writer -- are offered on fiction writing, poetry and creative nonfiction. The limited enrollment of the workshops helps foster close working relationships between teachers and workshop participants, ensuring that those in attendance receive individualized advice and encouragement. Evenings provide the students with opportunities to attend readings and socialize.
The evening reading series features conference faculty as well as conference participants and is free and open to the public. All of the readings will be held in the Indiana Memorial Union's Whittenberger Auditorium at 8 p.m.; the complete schedule of readings is available online under "Schedule" on the IUWC Web site.
For information on registration, go to the IUWC Web site at https://www.indiana.edu/~writecon/home.html or e-mail the IUWC office at writecon@indiana.edu.
