BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- One year after the beginning of the coalition's war on terrorism in Afghanistan, a gathering of Afghan and Afghan American scholars, including Afghanistan's minister of higher education, will meet for a conference at Indiana University Bloomington and participate in a public forum Oct. 8 on the consequences of the war on terrorism.

Sharif Fayez, minister of higher education of Afghanistan, will participate in a forum in the IU Radio-Television Building, Room 251, on Oct. 8 beginning at 7:30 p.m. This panel of Afghan and Afghan American scholars will discuss the impact of the year-long war against the Al Qaeda and Taliban terrorists in Afghanistan.

Other participants will include Abdul Wahed Sarabi, Afghanistan's former minister of planning; Zieba Shorish-Shamly, executive director of Women's Alliance for Peace and Human Rights in Afghanistan; and Alam Payind, director of the Middle Eastern Studies Center at Ohio State University and former director general of cultural and foreign relations at Kabul University in Afghanistan.

Also participating will be Nazif Shahrani, chair of the IU Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures and director of IU's Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Program. Shahrani organized a conference at IU Bloomington on strategic planning for higher education in Afghanistan on Sunday and Monday (Oct. 7-8).

Shahrani said the forum is expected to assess the effects of the war on Afghan society, both positive and negative, its prospects for the return of peace and national security in Afghanistan and central and southwestern Asia, and the consequences of war on global terrorism and future U.S. security.

Co-sponsors of the event are the IU Office of International Programs, the Office of the Vice Chancellor and Dean of Faculties, the Russian and East European Institute; the Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center, the Center for the Study of Global Change and the IU Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Program.
