BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Student Foundation today (Sept. 11) announced the availability of three $1,500 scholarships for Indiana University students. The scholarships were created to memorialize the terrorist attack victims who had ties to IU, as well as to honor the courage and commitment of all Americans in the time of turmoil surrounding the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Three IU students lost their fathers and one student lost his brother in the World Trade Center attacks.

Applications will be available Oct. 1 at the Wilcox House and online at www.iusf.org, and are due March 7, 2008. The scholarships will be awarded at a special ceremony during race week of the 2008 Little 500.

Proceeds of $4,500 from the Little 500 race activities -- which support 34 scholarships annually for working IU students -- will be used to fund the three 9/11Scholarships.

The IU Student Foundation was founded in 1950 by Howdy Wilcox. Its main goal was to spread the word around campus about the parent organization, the IU Foundation, which aims to create leadership opportunities and scholarships through campus events. Since 1951, the IU Student Foundation has used the Little 500 bicycle race and other student activities, such as IU Sing and Little Fifty, to raise money for working-student scholarships.

Today, the IU Student Foundation annually awards more than $70,000 in scholarships and has given more than $1.4 million in scholarships to IU students over the last 57 years. It currently has 500 student volunteers, who are led by a 23-member steering committee.

The mission of the IU Student Foundation is to create student leadership opportunities by conducting campus events, which raise funds for working student scholarships, as well as guide undergraduate students toward recognition and appreciation of their future roles as supportive Indiana University alumni.

Those with questions about the 9/11 scholarships should contact Matthew Ewing, IUSF's assistant director, by e-mail at mnewing@indiana.edu or by phone at 812-855-1937.
