Lee Hamilton to give public talk at IUB

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sept. 21, 2007

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Former U.S. Rep. Lee H. Hamilton will speak at Indiana University Bloomington as part of a course on science and public policy.

Hamilton, who represented Indiana's 9th District in Congress for 34 years, will speak at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 26) in the Oak Room of the Indiana Memorial Union, 900 E. Seventh St. The talk, part of a Department of Geography seminar titled "Science, Public Policy and Outreach," is open to the public.

Faiz Rahman, an associate professor of geography, developed and is teaching the course. He said it is aimed at helping future scientists learn to communicate with government officials, policy makers and the news media.

"This was my intention: to give students an idea of how things work in real life; and, if scientists want to inform policy makers about their science, how they can do it better," Rahman said.

Hamilton is the director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University and president and director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. He was vice chairman of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, also known as the 9/11 Commission. He co-chaired the Iraq Study Group with former Secretary of State James A. Baker III.
