Media Advisory: IU experts available to discuss Conseco

Editors: In response to this morning's (Dec. 18) announcement by Indianapolis-based Conseco Inc. to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization, we are providing you with experts from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. All of these experts are based in Indianapolis and are available in person for interviews.

The filing, made late last Monday in a Chicago court, is the third largest in U.S. history, behind only WorldCom Inc. and Enron Corp. You are encouraged to contact these sources directly, but George Vlahakis is available at 812-855-0846 or gvlahaki@indiana.edu to provide assistance. Additional sources in corporate governance and ethics may be provided in a future media advisory.

Currently available at IU's Kelley School of Business are:

Todd Saxton, assistant professor of management, who has been following Conseco's situation very closely as part of his research in corporate strategy and governance. He can be reached at 317-274-3349 (office), 317-823-2960 (home), 317-413-6866 (cell) or tsaxton@iupui.edu. He can discuss factors which led to today's news, including Conseco's flawed decison to acquire Green Tree Financial.

Robert Neal, associate professor of finance, who also has been following the Conseco story closely. Neal previously was an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank, is an expert in risk management and investment management, and is a member of IU's Business Outlook Panel. He can be reached at 317-274-3348 (office), 317-575-8659 (home) or skyking@iupui.edu.

Steven L. Jones, associate professor of finance, who can discuss corporate bankrupcy filings, including Conseco's. He researches corporate financial policy and decision making, with an emphasis on distressed companies. He can be reached at 317-278-7771 (office), 317-875-5497 (home) or sljones@iupui.edu.

Morton J. Marcus, executive director of the Indiana Business Research Center, who has followed the Midwest economy for more than 30 years. He can discuss the impact on Indiana of a second major Indianapolis employer filing for bankruptcy protection (Indianapolis is home to United Airlines' maintenance hub). He can be reached at 317-274-0892 (office) or marcus@indiana.edu.
