Bradford Woods wastewater treatment plant design wins statewide engineering honor

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The new wastewater treatment plant at Bradford Woods, an outdoor educational, recreational and professional development center for Indiana University Bloomington's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, has earned its engineers a statewide honor.
Engineer Mark Harrison, of Bernardin Lochmueller & Associates Inc., will receive an Honor Award for the project on Feb. 2, during the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Indiana chapter's annual Engineering Excellence Award banquet.
"We are honored that generous contributions by the Riley Foundation and the creative work of system designers produced an innovative and environmentally sound treatment plant," said Robert M. Goodman, dean of the School of HPER. "Such excellence and concern for the natural environment is a trademark of the work being done at Bradford Woods."
The $1.2 million state-of-the-art wetlands was touted last summer during its dedication ceremony for the educational and recreational opportunities it will provide and for its reflection of HPER's commitment to sustainable business practices. It was designed to replace the aging wastewater treatment facility at Bradford Woods, which is located near Martinsville.

The wetlands and wastewater treatment facility are the result of a partnership involving Riley Children's Foundation, Indiana University and the estate of Charles and Ruth Buskirk. Bradford Woods, which is part of HPER's Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies, provides environmental education programs for area elementary schools in addition to corporate and business training, leadership and team-building retreats, environmental education programs, weddings, family reunions and other programs. Bradford Woods is home to Camp Riley and other residential summer camps for people with disabilities.
Harrison was instrumental to the planning and implementation of the wastewater treatment plant, which was designed by Natural Concepts Engineering, a subsidiary of Bernardin Lochmueller & Associates Inc.
The plant is one of seven projects receiving the Honor Award and is now eligible for ACEC national recognition. The Engineering Excellence Awards recognize engineering achievements that "demonstrate the highest degree of merit and ingenuity by Indiana consulting engineering firms," according to the organization. "Entries are judged on the basis of engineering excellence, which includes: uniqueness and originality; future value to the engineering profession; social, economic and sustainable design considerations; complexity and exceeding the owner's/client's needs."
