IUB Continuing Studies Division receives state honor for hospital program
The Division of Continuing Studies at Indiana University Bloomington has been selected for a state award for the second consecutive year. The Indiana Council for Continuing Education (ICCE) chose the IUB Hospital Coding Certificate Program as "Course of the Year."
The five-course certificate program was developed by the Division of Continuing Studies in conjunction with Marcia Laux, educational services director for Bloomington Hospital, and Richard Rampley, program director at WorkOne, Indiana Workforce Development Department.
Through the Hospital Coding Certificate Program, evening classes are held at the hospital to allow current employees to upgrade their skills and to provide new opportunities for residents seeking employment in this growing field. The course content was developed by officials at IU and the hospital. WorkOne screened and tested the applicants.
"We are pleased with this recognition for our program," said Ron White, director of IUB Continuing Studies, "especially when it involves a project we have developed by working with a community agency."
The award will be presented at the ICCE awards luncheon in Indianapolis on Feb. 28 to Jim Pershing, assistant director of the IUB Continuing Studies Division, who manages the hospital program.
This is the second consecutive year the IUB Division of Continuing Studies has received an award from ICCE. Last year's "Faculty Member of the Year" honor went to Albert Wertheim, professor of English and comparative literature, who has taught courses and directed theater trips in Continuing Studies for more than 20 years.
