HPER dean co-authors physical education book
David Gallahue, dean of the Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER), is the co-author of a new book on children's physical education.
Gallahue and HPER graduate Frances Cleland Donnelly of West Chester University are the authors of the fourth edition of Developmental Physical Education for All Children. The 724-page book was published by Human Kinetics.
Gallahue, an international expert on children's motor development and movement skill learning, said the book is primarily for students in physical education, early childhood education and elementary education. He said the current edition -- including a CD-ROM with lesson plans and worksheets -- has been completely updated and revised since the last edition was published in 1996.
"This is a comprehensive text for a new generation of teachers educated to delivering quality, developmentally appropriate physical education that prepares all students for a lifetime of beneficial physical activity," said Gallahue, a professor of kinesiology at IU.
Included in the text are examples of real-life situations, teaching tips, terms to remember within each chapter, key concepts, and chapter objectives and summaries. Because the book's applications are international, it has been printed in English, Chinese, Japanese and Greek.
