Indiana University life sciences expertise on display at BIO 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's excellence in discovering, developing and delivering life sciences research and innovations will be on display June 17-20, in San Diego, Calif., during BIO 2008, the leading international conference for the biotechnology industry in the United States.
More than 20,000 attendees from biotechnology companies, academic institutions and related organizations will participate in BIO.
During BIO 2008, IU will showcase Indiana's life sciences strengths through an extensive display.
Indiana University's Office of Engagement, Office of the Vice Provost for Research, College of Arts and Sciences, Kelley School of Business and the IU Research and Technology Corp. are collaborating with the Indiana Economic Development Corp. and other state life sciences organizations in an expansive exhibit that showcases Indiana's life sciences strengths. In addition to IU, leading sponsors of the Indiana exhibit include Cook Pharmica, Dow AgroSciences and the Purdue Research Park/Discovery Park.
"With eight campuses and nine medical education centers, Indiana University has an abundance of resources and assets vital to life sciences research and industry," says William Stephan, IU Vice President for Engagement. "Research is IU's growth industry. We have top-ranked departments, such as our Department of Chemistry, and IU leads the state in health research. We're eager to share our university's successes in invention and technology transfer with the international audience at BIO 2008."
Several CEO's from Indiana start-up companies will join the IU delegation, including:
- Joe Muldoon, Fast Diagnostics LLC (diagnostic devices for kidney disease)
- Wade Lange, president and CEO, and Mike Klemz, founder and vice president for research, ImmuneWorks (novel therapies and diagnostic tests for pulmonary conditions)
- Kent Hawryluk, vice president for business development and finance, Marcadia Biotech (novel biopharmaceutical therapies for diabetes and obesity)
Indiana University members of the delegation include:
- Anthony Armstrong, executive director, Office of the Vice President for Engagement
- Lawrence Davidson, professor of business economics and public policy and liaison to IU's Kelley School of Business Health Care and Life Sciences Initiative.
- Sarita Soni, Vice Provost for Research
- Sherry Knighton-Schwandt, director of communications and special projects for the Office of the Vice Provost for Research
- Sue Sgambelluri, director of corporate and foundation relations for the IU College of Arts & Sciences
- Beth Kreitl, associate director, employer relations for the College of Arts & Sciences Career Development Center
- Jack Pincus, vice president for tech transfer, IU Research & Technology Corp.
- Jeremy Schieler, business development manager, IU Research & Technology Corp.
More than 65 countries will be in attendance at BIO 08. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gen. Colin Powell (Ret.) will deliver keynote speeches at the conference.
