Kelley Scholars announced at Indiana University

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Eleven Kelley Scholars have been selected by the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington.

Kelley Scholars, all incoming freshmen this fall who intend to major in business at IU Bloomington, will receive full tuition and fees, a stipend for living expenses and funding for academic activities such as overseas study. The award is for four years and has an annual value of more than $15,000 for recipients who are Indiana residents and about $30,000 for those who are non-residents.

The Kelley Scholars Program is funded by a $23 million gift from E.W. Kelley and his family, made to IU in the fall of 1997. The university named its school of business for the Kelley family in acknowledgement of the gift.

The Kelley Scholars were selected from a group of more than 200 students who had been accepted to IU and who were invited to apply for the Kelley program because of their outstanding academic records. The application included references, a high school transcript, several personal statements on a variety of topics and an essay.

The 11 Kelley Scholars, their hometowns and their high schools are:

  • Ben-Ari Boukai, the son of Gadi and Michele Boukai of Indianapolis -- A graduate of North Central High School, he also is an Adam W. Herbert Presidential Scholar and was president of his B'nai B'rith Youth Organization chapter and a four-year member of the state championship tennis team.
  • Joshua Bruce, the son of Tim and Jan Bruce of Remington, Ind. -- A graduate of Tri-County High School, he also is an Adam W. Herbert Presidential Scholar and was a member of the varsity track team, district president of the Business Professionals of America, president of the National Honor Society and chair of the Student Council Student Life Committee.
  • Samantha Capshew, the daughter of Alejandra Laszlo Capshew and Jim Capshew of Bloomington, Ind. -- A graduate of Bloomington High School North, she was a National Merit Commended Scholar, Hoosier Girls State delegate and a member of the National Honors Society and Leadership Opportunities Through Service.
  • Veejay Costello, the son of Thomas and Yogini Costello of South Bend, Ind. -- A graduate of Saint Joseph's High School, he was a member of the Mock Trial State Runner-Up Team, the Latin Club and Film Club.
  • Kathara Green, the daughter of Barry and Jeanne Green of Carmel, Ind. -- A graduate of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, she was a member of the school's track and field team and the Timmy Foundation.
  • Mitchell Harrison, the son of Brad and Robin Harrison of Evansville, Ind. -- A graduate of Harrison High School, he is a recipient of the Kiwanis Academic Achievement Award and Optimist Club Youth Award. He also was a finalist in a national contest held by Business Professionals of America, was named his school's outstanding business student and was a member of the National Honors Society, Spanish Club and tennis team.
  • Sumner Nichols, the son of Sumner and Barbara Nichols of Erie, Pa. -- A graduate of Collegiate Academy, he came in third national and best in state in the Decathlon and competed in the Mock Trial Competition. He was invited to attend the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Global Entrepreneurship at Lehigh University.
  • Jonathan Repka, the son of Sharon C. Repka of Fort Wayne, Ind. -- A graduate of Homestead High School, he also is an Adam W. Herbert Presidential Scholar. He was co-captain of the football team and a national qualifier to DECA (formerly the Distributive Education Clubs of America), an international association of students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality and marketing sales and service.
  • Nicholas Stoffregen, the son of Mike and Sandi Harrison of Munster, Ind. -- A graduate of Munster High School, he also is an Adam W. Herbert Presidential Scholar. He was co-captain of the state champion "We the People" team, captain of the soccer team, a DARE Role Model, a member of the National Honors Society and a four-year member of the National "A" Honor Roll. He received the Principal's Award for Excellence and was a Hoosier Boys State delegate.
  • Kyleigh Turk, the daughter of Dewayne and Barb Turk of Noblesville, Ind. -- A graduate of Noblesville High School, she was editor-in-chief of Mill Stream, her high school newspaper, co-captain of the cross country and track and field teams and treasurer of the National Honor Society. She is a National Merit Commended Student.
  • Sara Woolbright, the daughter of Dr. Randol Woolbright, Jr. and Terah Woolbright of Scottsburg, Ind. -- A graduate of Scottsburg High School, she also is an Adam W. Herbert Presidential Scholar. She received the Good Citizen Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution, was named to the Academic All-State Golf Team, was president of the Golf Club and captain of the Math Academic Team. She was a People to People student ambassador to Australia.
