Indiana University podcast innovators announced

More than 60 podcast projects to launch across IU campuses this fall

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana University Faculty Podcasting Initiative will support more than 60 innovative IU faculty members as they explore the potential of podcasting in higher education and student learning. Supported by Apple and AT&T with equipment and software -- and with the guidance of the IU centers for teaching and learning -- faculty projects will commence in the fall semester of 2008.

While podcasting is not new to IU, this initiative broadly expands the activity across the university and integrates multiple paths for faculty podcasters, offering a variety of ways users can choose to access IU content, and enabling instructors to accelerate their use of podcasting.

The Faculty Podcasting Initiative, administered by University Information Technology Services (UITS), will distribute funding for podcast recording equipment and computer software to encourage faculty to create and apply forward-thinking instructional and student learning opportunities using new media. Part-time and full-time faculty members and entire departments from a broad range of disciplines -- and six of IU's eight campuses statewide -- received hardware and software grants totaling more than $113,000.

"We are delighted with the enthusiastic response to the Faculty Podcasting Initiative," said Anastasia (Stacy) Morrone, associate dean for learning technologies at IU. "The number of proposals submitted, almost 100, vastly exceeded our expectations. Three faculty review committees made recommendations for funding, and we were pleased to be able to fund nearly 60 percent of the proposals."

Funded resources will include podcasting equipment including microphones, headsets and camcorders, as well as iPod Nano personal .mp3 players and digital audio and video editing software.

"AT&T has long history of supporting higher education and efforts to enhance the student life experience, improve the education process and help colleges and universities use technology to meet their educational and administrative goals."

The range of faculty proposals will propel instruction beyond the classroom and provide students with invaluable additional learning opportunities. At the IU School of Dentistry at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, for example, Professors Serkis C. Isikbay and Katherine Kula will create video podcasts that demonstrate basic orthodontic skills such as patient care and tooth modeling. Professor Minda Douglas at IU Kokomo's School of Arts and Sciences will feature instructor-led video podcast tours of museums in Indianapolis and Chicago. At IU Bloomington, podcasts from instructor Zak Montgomery will provide Portuguese language students the means to practice pronunciation and listening skills outside of class using iPods and other personal media devices.

"The imagination and the meaningful evaluation of teaching and learning outside of class time is very inspiring," said Morrone. "Faculty have taken the reins and proposed ideas that will employ new and emerging technology that can only benefit students. We look forward to the results of these exciting projects."

This initiative integrates multiple paths for podcasts at IU. University-wide podcast services have been available through IU's enterprise course management system, Oncourse, since fall 2006. The podcast tool in Oncourse now integrates with the university's presence on iTunes U. In addition, IU's gateway podcast portal,, offers more than 800 podcast episodes from content providers across the university, including UITS, the Jacobs School of Music, the IU Alumni Association and the IU School of Medicine.
