IU Informatics graduate excels in Web development, launches software development company

July 10, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS -- For Sandosh Vasudevan the word "leisure" doesn't necessarily compute. That's because Vasudevan, a native of India who came to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis for graduate school, seemingly spends every waking moment developing software applications -- projects that are turning heads in Silicon Valley and beyond.

Last summer, Vasudevan, 25, completed an internship with Web portal giant Yahoo!, where he created a Web analytics extension to Firefox for use by the company's programmers and engineers. On weekends, Sandosh developed a movie selection widget for Yahoo! Widget Engine. It was judged a "must ship with widget," the top such ranking among Yahoo! intern projects.

Sufficiently impressed, Yahoo! extended a job offer to Vasudevan who instead chose to return to IUPUI to complete his master's degree in human computer interaction in the IU School of Informatics, graduating in May.

"I like to keep busy," explained Vasudevan. "Whatever you are working on should be fun, and I really enjoy software development."

Vasudevan recently turned his sights on Apple's iPhone, developing iPhocal, a tool allowing iPhone users to search for businesses, to see their ratings and reviews, and to navigate to their location via an online map ( The tool is featured on Apple's Web site.

Users of two other leading Web services also have Vasudevan-developed tools available to them. MySocial 24x7 is a plugin for the popular Firefox Web browser that aggregates a user's FriendFeed activity. FriendFeed is a popular online social network. gDocsBar is a Firefox extension that brings full Google Docs functionality to the browser's sidebar ( To date, gDocsBar has been downloaded more than 40,000 times. Sandosh says he's just getting started.

"I've launched a startup company called TiseMe, an Indianapolis-based developer of software and Web tools," said Vasudevan. "Our focus is creating applications that are easy to use and that increase personal and workplace productivity."

Vasudevan's informatics faculty mentors were Anthony Faiola and Karl F. MacDorman, with whom he co-authored two research papers and developed a Web site to support psychological experiments for human-android research (

"Tony and Karl provided tremendous support and guidance, helping me get to where I am today professionally," offered Vasudevan.

And while a doctorate might be in his future, for now Sandosh is content to grow his startup company into a highly successful enterprise. And, he's grateful for his IUPUI experience.

"IUPUI and the School of Informatics provided me with opportunities to meet interesting people from around the world," Vasudevan said. "I very much enjoyed my campus experience, and look forward to giving back in some way."
