16th Annual Silk Road Bayram to present a musical and cultural journey from famed trade route

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center at Indiana University and the Silk Road Institute are presenting the 16th Annual Silk Road Bayram on Saturday (July 19) in a program with the theme of "Musical Stops on the Silk Road Regions: A Special Visit to the Musical Culture of the Azerbaijani People."
Bayram is a Turkic and Central Asian word meaning a community festivity. The festival will celebrate the music and cultures of the Silk Road regions, the historical route that connected East and West. The 16th Annual Silk Road Bayram is a showcase of the arts of this famous route traveled since 2000 B.C.
The program will feature a special guest tar player, Arif Bagirov from Azerbaijan. A cultural exhibit opens at 5 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 221 E. 6th St., with a concert to follow at 6 p.m. It also will include artists from several regions of the Silk Road with dances and a fashion show.
All events are free and open to the public. This educational program is also made possible by the support of numerous IU departments, the community, national and international cultural organizations and businesses.
