IU Summer Program in Sustainability Symposium to showcase student work

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- On Aug. 15, students engaged in Indiana University's Summer Program in Sustainability will showcase the projects they worked on over the summer.

The second annual Indiana University Sustainability Internship Symposium will take place from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Forest-Greenleaf Dining Hall located at 1725 E. Third St. on the IU Bloomington campus. It will include oral and poster presentations and a lunch reception hosted by Residential Programs and Services Dining Services, featuring local and organic foods.

"This event is the culmination of three months of intensive work by an extraordinary group of students," said Michael Hamburger, co-chair of the IU Task Force on Campus Sustainability. "It provides an opportunity for the students to share the exciting results of their work and for the audience to gain an appreciation for the breadth of sustainability-related research going on at Indiana University."

During the symposium, interns will share the products of their summer projects, which range from investigating IU's greenhouse gas budget and calculating the carbon footprint of IU's food supply, to long-range implementation projects exploring IU's sustainability efforts in the libraries, campus computing systems, and the university landscape.

The luncheon will be hosted by RPS Director of Dining Services Sandra Fowler and RPS Executive Chef Ancil Drake. It will give participants an opportunity to enjoy sustainable food while enjoying the poster sessions with the interns, students, faculty and staff involved in sustainability at IU.

"We are happy to represent RPS Dining Services in sponsoring this event," said Fowler.

Drake said the menu will include foods from local vendors and recipes made at Forest Residence Center.

"Our department continues to work toward becoming more sustainable each year," Drake added.

David Fuente, program coordinator for the Summer Program in Sustainability, said, "In our view the summer program has been a great success. It allows students to wrestle with both theory and practice and contribute to the university in a meaningful way. We're continually impressed with the outstanding quality of summer interns' and fellows' work. They bring a tremendous amount of insight and energy to the sustainability initiative and play a critical role in advancing sustainability on campus."

The IU Task Force on Campus Sustainability was established in March 2007 by IU Vice President for Administration Terry Clapacs and is co-chaired by Michael Hamburger, professor of geological sciences, and Paul Sullivan, deputy vice president for administration. Its mission is to develop and implement initiatives to advance sustainability on IU's Bloomington campus.
